Unconventional Wedding Calls for Unconventional Wedding Cake Toppers

The centerpiece of a wedding ceremony is the wedding cake. Multi-tiered concoctions, constructed with the same diligence and creativity that architects lavish on skyscrapers. The wedding cake toppers are the barely noticed after-thoughts - the boringly typical scene of a tiny groom holding the hand of his tiny bride.

Weddings and marriages have evolved, and with that, weddings have changed as well - the wedding cake toppers now have the opportunity to reflect the wit of the wedding party. Comic scenes, nontraditional couplings, and highly stylized sculptures have taken the place of the cute but dull miniature bride and groom.

Wedding Cake Toppers, Like Wedding Couples, Come in All Shapes and Sizes

On news shows, when the anchors report on "same-sex marriage" the graphics that jauntily pop-up over their shoulders are usually a variation on traditional wedding cake toppers, except there are two brides or two grooms holding hands under the tiny plastic arch. Gay weddings, a growing trend among gay couples who want to share their commitment with their loved ones, also signal a slant on wedding rituals, including the wedding cake toppers. While most of the wedding sites still work specifically with heterosexual couples, some have recognized the power of the pink dollar and have gladly modified their wares for same-sex couples.

Nontraditional couples, such as interracial couples, also use their wedding cake toppers to reflect their union. The wedding planning site www.theknot.com believes that since brides and grooms do not look all alike, then wedding cake toppers shouldn't look alike either. The brides and grooms are interchangeable, so an African-American bride can be carried over the cake threshold in the arms of an Asian-American groom.

Even Though It's a Wedding, It's Still a Party

The implicit political statements made by interracial or gay wedding cake toppers are empowering, but often the marrying couple are known as silly or funny and want their wedding to reflect their humor and wit. Instead of having the traditional bride and groom stand, ramrod stiff next to each other, some wedding cake toppers depict funny scenes such as the bride dragging a kicking and screaming groom. A popular topper, "The Tiff," shows the married couple in acrimonious wedded non-bliss, as both have their backs turned to each other.

The novelty wedding cake toppers can be relatively witty, such as "The Tiff," or they can be mindlessly absurd, such as the toppers available on www.weddingaccessories.net that offer wedding cake toppers that have the bride and groom represented as cows or dolphins with top hats and bouquets. While silly wedding cake toppers are very specific to the taste of each couple, they can be a fun way to dress up a wedding cake.

Choose What's Right for Your Wedding

The choices for marrying couples are dizzying, and a small detail such as wedding cake toppers can seem trivial. In the grand scheme of the whole wedding, they can be; however, a cleverly chosen accent to the wedding cake can bring up laughs and conversations. Whether it's a subtle, abstract sculpture, a cute Precious Moments topper, or a ridiculously obvious novelty, the cake should reflect the married couple.
